[LMD is rewarded] The book “Principles of Remote Sensing,” co-written by researchers from LMD, winner of the 2025 Roberval Prize

On November 22, 2025, during the ceremony held at the Imperial Theatre of Compiègne, the book Principles of Remote Sensing: Applications to Earth and Climate Observation received the Special Jury Mention of the 2025 Roberval Prize in the Higher Education category.

This international French-speaking prize honors each year works that make technology and science accessible. This distinction highlights the work of a team of six atmospheric physicists, three of whom are members of our laboratory:

The book was co-written with Hélène Brogniez (LSCE), Marjolaine Chiriaco (LATMOS) and Solène Turquety (LATMOS).

From research to teaching

This book grew out of the authors’ experience gained through their teaching at Sorbonne University and UVSQ, as well as their research conducted at the Pierre Simon Laplace Institute (IPSL).

Aimed primarily at undergraduate and master’s students, but also at anyone wishing to discover climate sciences, the book offers a step-by-step introduction to the physical principles of remote sensing. It explains how space-based data are produced and used to better understand the environment and climate.

A commitment to women in science

The financial award associated with the Roberval Prize, as well as all of the authors’ royalties from the book, are donated to the association “Femmes et Sciences”, which promotes the role of women in scientific careers.

The LMD warmly congratulates Laurence, Hélène, Marine, and their co-authors on this well-deserved recognition!
