Yan Barabinot, a 3rd year PhD student at the LMD-ENS, is calculating a 3D vortex form with minimal enstrophy in the context of quasi-geostrophic stratified flows. A 2D formula had already been found in 1984 by the scientist Leith using a variational method. Yan Barabinot has generalised it to 3D. This work contributes to our understanding of the shape of vortices in rotating stratified media.
