[LMD is] Studying Biomass Burning Emissions in South America – A PhD Thesis by Victor BON

Victor BON is a third-year PhD student at LMD. He initially pursued an aeronautical engineering degree, complemented by a research master’s degree in Fundamental Remote Sensing at Sorbonne University.

His PhD research focuses on the impact of biomass burning on greenhouse gas emissions, specifically measuring atmospheric concentrations of CO₂, CH₄, and CO in the mid-troposphere using satellite data. By combining satellite observations of both the physical characteristics of fires and gas concentrations with a Lagrangian atmospheric transport model, he seeks to better understand how fire-related emissions are transported through the atmosphere.

In the image, the blue lines represent the 10-day backward trajectory of CO₂ anomalies (green dots) caused by South American fires. These trajectories help trace the anomalies back to the tropical regions where they were likely emitted (red dots).
