[LMD gets involved] LMD joins the Stand Up for Science Day, on March 7, 2025

Scientific research, and in particular climate science, is currently facing unprecedented attacks from the US government. These attacks concern:

  • jobs, in particular new recruits, the youngest and most precarious people and DEI (diversity-equality, i.e. women, racialized people, disabled workers, etc.),
  • data (erased, made inaccessible, etc.), particularly in the fields of climate, meteorology and health,
  • international collaborations (interruption of conferences/workshops on American territory, prohibition to go to conferences/workshops abroad, prohibition to participate in videoconferences),
  • censorship of certain words: e.g. censorship of the word “climate change” on federal agency websites, halting funding for projects where words related to climate, gender or diversity appear,
  • funding for medical, climate, environmental, meteorological, social science and educational research,
  • DEI programs (diversity-equality-inclusion), incitement to denounce people known for their activism in favor of diversity and equality.

In the face of these attacks, the LMD stands in solidarity with Stand Up for Science Day on March 7, 2025. Echoing the statements made by IPSL and CNRS, the LMD supports the scientific process, academic freedom and international scientific cooperation. The LMD defends an inclusive, collective and equitable approach to the practice of research, within which programs in favor of diversity, equality and inclusion have their rightful place. Our thoughts and support go out to our colleagues and all those who find themselves helpless in the face of these brutal changes.
