[LMD recruits] Victor Pellet as a Lecturer at École Polytechnique.
Victor holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences (2018, SU) and an engineering degree (2015, Grenoble-INP). He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Tokyo before returning to France, thanks to a CNES Postdoctoral fellowship (2020-2022) followed by an ESA Living Planet fellowship (2022-2024).
During his studies, he gained initial research experience optimizing the processing of hyperspectral satellite observations (microwave and infrared) for estimating atmospheric and surface variables. Subsequently, he continued to develop his expertise in remote sensing and statistical retrieval of geophysical variables. His PhD, focused on satellite observation of the hydrological cycle, was conducted within the framework of the HYMEX decadal project in the Mediterranean region.
His main research work focuses on satellite monitoring of the water cycle: understanding to what extent the water cycle and its spatial and temporal variations can be reliably quantified from satellite observations. Satellite products often contain numerous systematic and random errors and are frequently inconsistent with one another. When taken individually, their information content is limited and provides only a fragmented view of the hydrological cycle. However, integrating and combining multiple satellite products allows for leveraging the synergy between estimates, not only of the same variable but also between variables that are physically related, in this case, through the conservation of water.
With his arrival at LMD, Victor aims to further develop his research on satellite monitoring of the water cycle: developing statistical retrievals of hydrological variables and building an integrated approach between satellite observation and modeling.
